Avenue House

Drawing cues from the heritage architecture of Willoughby’s surroundings, Avenue House is a contemporary sanctuary of warmth and connection.

Avenue House emanates warmth and intimacy - a contemporary family sanctuary thoughtfully inspired by the distinctive heritage character of the suburb of Willoughby in Sydney. Constructed by Hall and Hart, the residence is anchored by open plan living and centralised communal zones, each individually designed to nurture pockets of connection, comfort, and the relaxed liveability that defines the Australian way of living.

In their exploration of materiality for the project, Hall and Hart found the perfect expression of their vision in Bowral Bricks’ Chillingham White 50. Initially, rendered, painted brick, and textured finishes were trialled, yet they fell short - offering neither the warmth nor the continuity of the interior expression that the home demanded.

By contrast, the dry-pressed brick, made of locally sourced clay, provided a subtly elegant, contemporary canvas. This choice in materiality introduced a level of natural authenticity, tactility, and character - central to emoting the tone that Hall and Hart were hoping to convey, whilst quietly honouring the heritage streetscape of Willoughby.

Throughout the interior, a palette of warm timbers and soft neutral tones weave a serene foundation, elevated by accents of colour - such as the stunning burgundy kitchen island - delivering a sense of calm and effortless sophistication.

Large windows and expansive sliding doors seamlessly harmonise the indoors and out, embracing the local landscape and creating a continuous multi-living zone. Due to the expansive windows, the interiors are bathed in floods of light, with the living areas experiencing shades of sun throughout the day, adding to the home’s sense of airy ease.

Avenue House embodies the transformative effect that materiality can have on the home - not simply only in an aesthetic capacity, but also in its contribution to functionality, longevity, and the emotional tone of the space. In integrating Bowral Bricks Chillingham White 50, Hall and Hart have imbued the home with a sophisticated, architectural feel, whilst retaining the warmth and intimacy necessary for a family oriented environment.
