A striking new building located in the heritage town of Toowoomba, South Eastern QLD, architects Marc & Co innovatively utilised bricks throughout the home to create a seamless flow between the interior and exterior of the design. Upon closer inspection, the bricks in use also highlight the eco-conscious lens which was taken throughout the project. The use of red brick in a contemporary way, pays homage to the historical culture of the town while also paving way for new design elements in the area.
The family home has a strong focus on brickwork throughout the design, specifically utilising Austral Nubrik Blocks from Brickworks. Manufactured in Melbourne, Nubrik is built to last the test of time, playing to the heritage of Toowoomba. The pressed clay brick creates a timeless finish with the subtle marbling and refined character. The mincing of natural rock creates a distinctive multicoloured tone that is reminiscent of the Australian landscape.
Aside from the aesthetic of the brickwork, Nubrik also provides the build with sustainability markers being that they are eco-conscious, made using reduced emissions. In addition, clay bricks such as the Nubrik also improve air quality, as they are classified as healthy building materials, free from toxins and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
The Chapel Red of the Nubrik block is bold nod to the historical use of the red brick, however the new revival of a previously ‘outdated’ product is setting a new benchmark for designers and architects. Gone are the negative connotations of a bare red brick, as the revival is seeing a new innovative design focused orientation for them. Leading towards a celebration of material and heritage qualities.
Marc&Co Architects has successfully celebrated the versatility of the bricks, flowing throughout the home and along the exterior. With their colour choice and textuality successfully playing on the cultural and design heritage of Toowoomba. Shaping a build to be both culturally and sustainably driven. The all encompassing design of the project personifies the local landscape and act as a benchmark for family homes in the area.
